Before we get to the funny stuff, I would like to thank everyone who has been watching since the beginning and making it a huge success by watching it in your class and laughing and talking about it. Lastly I would like to say sorry for the recent delay of videos. Thank you once again.

Okay in spirit of the FIFA world cup that’s coming up. I thought I would show a video of what not to do in a soccer game. Nobody likes a show off unless they fail hardcore in a fashionable way.

Bored this summer? Head out with your friends to Six Flags!

By Neiah Williams '12
Six Flags Great America is an amazing theme park that has great rides, shows, and fun water parks. One of Six Flags theme parks is located between Chicago and Milwaukee, off I-94 at route 132(Grand Avenue). Six Flags Great America has no exact date when they open or close. It usually closes in the winter, but stays open the rest of the year.

Six Flags Great America has a lot of rides to choose from such as: The Dark Knight Coaster, The American Eagle, The Demon, Superman: Ultimate Flight, Batman the Ride, The Raging Bull, The Little Dipper, and The Giant Drop. Six Flags Great America has a total of 58 fun and fantastic rides.

My favorite two rides that I always ride when I go to Six Flags are The Batman ride and The Demon ride. I love the Batman ride because my feet always dangle when I get on this ride. This ride takes off very fast and makes me feel like I am flying. Even though I always get scared when I get on this ride I always push myself to get on just for the excitement. My other favorite ride that I like at six flags is The Demon ride because it is one my favorite roller coasters at six flags.

The top three rides at Six Flags Great America in many peoples opinions are The Raging Bull, Superman: Ultimate flight, and Vertical Velocity. The Raging Bull is considered one of Six Flags most famous rides. In many peoples opinions the Raging Bull is the best ride at six flags. The Raging Bull is the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster at Six Flags Great America. If you ever decide to go to Six Flags you have to get on this ride.

The second best ride at Six Flags is Superman: Ultimate Flight. This ride is considered the second best ride at Six Flags because it is one of the best roller coaster rides at Six Flags. This ride takes you through a track that spends around in one big loop.

The third best ride at Six Flags is Vertical Velocity because this ride shoots riders straight up in the air really fast. This ride is shaped like a field goal post after you go up one side you come down and shoot to the other side.

Six Flags has some great concerts and shows. Six Flags tries to get different celebrities to come and perform for their customers. Some shows that Six Flags Great America have are Looney Tunes Dance Off, Great America Idol, Show Stoppin, and Street Entertainment. I really don’t pay attention to their shows when I go there because the shows are geared more toward younger kids.

If you happen to be at Six Flags on a warm day, you are in luck; Six Flags Great America has 10 different water rides to choose from. Such as: Buccaneer Bay, Castaway Creek, Hurricane Bay, Skull Island and many more.

If you have nothing to do for the summer try spending a day at Six Flags Great America because it is a fun way to have a good time with your friends, and family.

Marines at the Movies: Iron Man 2 - Best Superhero Movie of 2010?

By: Reginald King '11

(Spoiler Alert….This contains information on many parts of the plot in Iron Man 1 and 2)

The first Iron Man turned out to be a solid success. It earned a rating of four stars, 2 Oscars, and 12 other nominations. These include best actor, special effects, director, music and best sci-fi film. The plot focuses on Iron Man’s origin. Tony Stark is a genius who inherited his father’s company’ Stark Industries. They develop military weapons and U.S. defense systems. Tony starts out as naïve and wants to maintain his father’s standard of being “feared and respected”. He builds a highly effective missile system called the Jericho. He goes overseas to test it and the test which turns out to be a raving success. Terrorists ambush Tony and his companions and he is caught in a bomb explosion.

When Tony comes to; he finds he has been surgically repaired by a man named Yensin. Their terrorist captors try to force Tony to build the Jericho missile but instead, he builds a tech suit and manages to escape. When Tony returns to America, he has much more admirable consideration for American citizens’ safety. He decides to build a new suit called the Mark I. After several tests, the suit is operational and he is able to protect people. His adversary Obadiah goes back to the Middle East and acquires the remains of Tony’s original suit, Obadiah rebuilds it and becomes the Iron Monger. The battle between Iron Man and iron Monger is intense and keeps the audience’s attention.

At the end of the movie, Tony declares that he is Iron Man and after the credits he is approached by a man named Nick Fury who asks him to join the S.H.I.E.L.D organization,; Tony immediately refuses Fury’s offer. This gives an immediate indication that there will be a sequel.

The second movie was even better than the first. The plot really begins to develop and more of Iron Man’s allies and enemies are introduced. The story takes place six months after the first. Tony has reached public success; unfortunately, his exploits as Iron Man haven’t impressed the government. They demand that Tony hand over his Iron Man suits; naturally, Tony refused.

The government sees Iron Man as a threat to society and his rivaling company, Hammer industries sees this as an advantage. He attempts to ruin Stark industries but he is ultimately unsuccessful. Tony realizes that he is dying from palladium poisoning from the miniature Arc Reactor. He throws what he believes will be his last birthday party and appoints Pepper Potts CEO of Stark industries. He also appoints Natalie Rushman as Pepper’s assistant. Tony makes a fool of himself at his party; his friend Lt Col. James Rhodes takes one of Tony’s original suits and attempts to force some sense into him. Nick Fury and Tony’s father’s heirlooms help Tony create a new element for the Arc Reactor; one that isn’t as dangerous as the previous one.

Nobody wins the fight and Rhodes leaves with the stolen suit; he brings it to Justin Hammer who upgrades the stolen suit’s weapon systems. He also broke Ivan Vanko out of prison and bribes him into creating a tech suit that is stronger than Tony’s. Instead, Vanko builds a series of drones. When Hammer tries to upstage Tony’s expo, it is soon discovered that Vanko has control of Rhodes’ armor and the drones. The final battle and the ending are decent; especially since Rhodes joined forces with Tony. Fury appoints Tony as a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D.

After the credits, a scene reveals S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) driving to a lone crater in the New Mexico desert. As he informs Fury over the phone that they've "found it", the crater is shown to contain Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor. Fans haven’t been disappointed and still look forward to the next movie.

MMSA Students React to New Immigration Law

By: Harry Diggs-Wilson '11 & Jose Fernandez '11

On May 5, 2010 a few of the students from Marine Math and Science Academy (MMSA) held a day of silence against the new Immigration Law SB1070 2010 that was passed in Arizona on April 23, 2010.

The Arizona Immigration Law was signed by the Governor Jan Brewer. The law now makes it a state crime for people to be in the United States illegally. The law states that law enforcers are required to ask individuals that they suspect to be in the US illegally to produce proof that they are legal citizens. If they cannot show proof, they will be detained. The consequences of illegal citizenship are imprisonment for six months, and a $2,500 fine.

Many people feel that this law is unconstitutional or as Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon says "just plain wrong." Statistics show that 30 percent of Arizona is Hispanic and about 80 percent of illegal immigrants are also Hispanic. People feel that it will cause racial profiling against people with color or non-white citizens. "Are we going to get pulled over just because of a broken taillight or because of the color of our skin? ... If so, is everybody going to be pulled over?" Stated a protester Jose Acosta.

Despite being almost two thousand miles away from Arizona, students at MMSA reacted as if it was happening right here in Chicago. “I believe that the new law is wrong.” Says a MMSA cadet who feels that with these new laws, families in Arizona will now have to worry more about the safety of themselves and their children. Although the law does not only target Hispanics, 80 percent of the illegally immigrants are Hispanic. Cadets from MMSA who protested the new law felt that Arizona is only doing these to help open up more jobs by taking away jobs held by illegal immigrants.

Although there are a lot of people that are against the law there are also many people for the law. 59 percent of people in Arizona approve the new illegal immigration Law. The people in Arizona feel that illegal immigrants shouldn’t be in the States and should be sent back. They also feel that the police have the right to detain ask questions to anyone they have suspicious of being in the states illegally.

A Long Way From Home: Shaunak Patel's Travels from India to MMSA

By: Daisy Guzman ’11 & Julie Ayala ‘11

Imagine traveling 7,777 miles to a new country, one completely different from where you grew up. Shaunak Patel ’11 has had that experience coming to the U.S from India. It is a whole new experience of customs coming to the United States.

It’s been almost a year since Patel has been here in Chicago. With family influences and the permission of the U.S Embassy, Patel came to the United States. At times Patel struggles to adapt to a different way of life then the one he’s accustomed to. “It’s kind of boring here because you can’t really go out at night due to the gangs and violence. There’s more freedom in India” says Patel. He explained how his parents wouldn’t worry about how late he got home or where he was at because it was safer in India. Living here with his uncle and cousins, he still has to look out for himself and his younger brother while the rest of his family is still back in India and his mother is in Iowa. Although American eating habits are diverse, Patel continues to be a vegetarian and mostly eat his traditional Indian foods, due to his religious beliefs.

Patel described how school in India is unlike school here in America. “The teachers educate their students with more advanced mathematics.” Even though they have advanced teaching, they still don’t have as many extracurricular activities as we do. In India, cricket is the main sport played. Patel has been able to expand his athletic ability by joining baseball which is similar to cricket. You may be asking yourself, how did he learn English? Well, Patel stated that he first started learning English since 2nd grade at an English medium school. “Students are respectful and they want to study hard.”

Patel chose to attend a military school here in Chicago but Marine Math and Science Academy (MMSA) wasn’t his first choice. Actually he never even knew he was applying for MMSA. Upon arriving to the school he was trying to apply to Phoenix Military Academy (PMA) but their doors were locked. Seeing as he was trying to get in, a Marine cadet came and opened the door for him and his uncle. Once inside, he was taken to our main office where Lt. Colonel Stewart interviewed him, yet at the time Patel was unaware that he was being interviewed for MMSA instead of PMA. He was surprised when his uncle finally told him that he had actually applied to a different school. Overall, Patel likes being at MMSA, “The students and teachers have been friendly and understanding. They work with me if they see I’m having trouble with something.”

Patel plans to continue his education here. In college he wants to major as a computer science engineer and further his studies to do aeronautics for the Marines. He plans to permanently become a citizen of the U.S. in order to do that he has to stay for a minimum of five years. He will go back to India to visit after he has become a citizen, until then he still keeps his traditions alive and keeps in contact with his family. He still says his prayers and celebrates only his culture holidays such as, Raksha Bandhan which is when a sister gives her brother a bracelet to symbolize protection. Despite all the changes in Patel’s life he knows everything will work out. “I believe that God is with me so I don’t have to be scared.”

Bulldog Ink: MMSA students share the stories behind their tattoos

By Adrian Hopson '11

At Marine Math & Science Academy (MMSA) walking through the hallways you will find several cadets with tattoos on their arm or other body parts. Tattoos are very popular with teens. I started to wonder what the tattoos meant to them and why they got them. Tattoos are something permanent and some people feel that tattoos shouldn’t be done and some feel they should.

The first person I interviewed was Shavonda Kornegay ‘11. One of her tattoos says Family first. “To me, no one comes before your family” Kornegay said. “It shows that blood is thicker than water.” She got her tattoo last April to let her friends and others know how she feels. To her getting a tattoo doesn’t hurt, “it’s the coloring that hurts the most” Kornegay said. When asked if she regretted getting tattoos, Shavonda said “I don’t regret getting them, if a person wants a tattoo then they should get something that means something to them.” The rumor that getting tattoos is addictive is true; Shavonda has already gotten four of them.

Gregory Peters ‘11 told me that the reason he got tattoos was because he thinks they look sexy on him. One of his tattoos that has special meaning to him is his tattoo of his grandmother’s name. “I know that no matter what my grandmother is going to be there for me when I need her.” Peters said. Gregory also told me that tattoos didn’t really hurt that much. The place on your body that hurts the most to get a tattoo on is your back according to Gregory. “Tattoos are addictive to me and I do plan on getting more I just don’t know what yet.”

Mariah Coleman ‘11 got a tattoo because she wanted one and felt that since she was old enough to get one. She got her name tattooed on her arm for her first tattoo because she didn’t want to regret her first one. Mariah told me she doesn’t regret getting a tattoo because she got something that she wanted. “I feel that people should get a tattoo only if that’s what they really want to do.” When asked are tattoo addictive she told me not to her, but to some people they might be. “If I get another tattoo I want designs added to my name.”

“The reason I got tattoos is because I really like body art” Luis Telles ’11 said. Luis got religious tattoos because some of his family members passed away and he wanted to keep them in his memories. He doesn’t regret his tattoos, but he does wish he could get more and plans on doing so after high school. “Since they are so addictive I plan on getting the Marine Corp eagle globe and anchor.” To him the pain of getting a tattoo is all in your head. “When I got mine I didn’t feel the pain.” Luis feels that if people want a tattoo they should get something they really want because they never go away unless surgical removed. “I think getting a tattoo is a personal thing for people if they want them or not.”

Bulldog Tube Time: True Blood

By Neiah Williams '12

True Blood is a Romantic drama series that comes on HBO Sundays at 10/9 central. True blood is in their third season of their series. This series is very popular because during their first season they had 1.44 million viewers each week. During their second season of the series they had 12. 4 million viewers each week. The third season of true blood comes on June 13th 2010. I would give true blood a 9/10 star rating because this series just leaves you with wanting more.

The Main Characters in True Blood are Sookie Stackhouse, Bill Compton, Eric Thorman, Jason Stackhouse, Sam Merlotte, Tara Thornton, and Lafayette Reynolds. Sookie Stackhouse is a telepathic waitress who is dating a vampire. Bill Compton is a 173-year old vampire who is dating and falls in love with Sookie Stackhouse. Eric Thorman is an old and powerful vampire who really despises human life. Jason Stackhouse is Sookie’s brother who just has a lot of girl problems. Sam Merlotte is Sookie’s boss who runs a bar in Bon Temps, and whom is a shape shifter. A shape shifter is a person that can change into an animal that he or she sees before changing. Tara Thornton is Sookie’s best friend who just seem to have problems every where she goes. Lafayette Reynolds is Tara’s cousin who just wants to live life to the fullest. Sookie, Tara, Sam, and Lafayette all are friends that work together at Merlotte’s the bar that they all work at.

True Blood is a series about a telepathic waitress who lives in a small town in Louisiana called Bon Temps. Bon Temps is a town that has both humans and vampires. So “yes” a lot of creepy stuff happens there. Although a Japanese company created synthetic blood for the vampires to drink. The humans in that town feel that it’s not a good idea to put both humans and vampires together and live amongst one another. Sookie is considered to be an outcast and a “ FREAK” because she can read peoples mind. She finds herself being a normal human around Bill because she can’t read his mind. While they relationship takes off trouble seems to follow them because of what they’ve become which is a vampire dating a human.

I can honestly say that I have no favorite episode when it comes to True Blood, because I love them all. I mean I love the way all the actors portray their characters. I have no favorite character in the series, because I love them all. I love the way the make-up is put on the vampires, to make them seem dead and deadly. I love the way the characters talk with an old country voice. I think Alan Ball the Director and Creator of true blood does a fascinating job of keeping his hit series funny, enjoying, and well written.

I just can’t wait until the third season of True Blood comes on June 13, 2010. I know this season is going to turn heads. I am not really excited about waiting until June to see the third season of the series. I mean “come on” I want to see more of True Blood; I am dying in the inside for this new season. True Blood is just an addictive show to me I just can’t stop watching it makes me wanting more. I love watching True Blood, but one of my disappointments about the show is the long waiting period for the new season to start.

Kicks on Campus: Looking for the best pair of Jordans

By Ryan Hargrave '11

For over a decade the Jordan sneaker line has been setting the trend for fashionable gym shoes. You can barely walk around outside for twenty minutes without seeing a pair of Jordan’s on someone’s feet. Marine Math and Science Academy students have to wear a uniform, so you might catch a few people out of uniform wearing Jordan shoes at the risk of getting demerits.

I think the reason the Jordan shoe is so popular is because it carries on the legacy of Michael Jordan; who is arguably one of the best basketball players of all time. The shoe made its first appearance in 1984 when Michael made his deal with the Nike shoe brand. Since then the Jordan shoe has been very popular especially in young people. Michael Jordan accomplished a lot of things in his career while wearing his shoe brand.

In 1992 he released the Air Jordan VII which he wore to the 1992 Olympics to play on the U.S men’s basketball team. They featured Jordan's Olympic jersey number, 9 while all of the previous Air Jordan models that featured his jersey number had always been the number 23. That is why the Air Jordan VII is my favorite Jordan sneaker.

Teacher's Hidden Talents Revealed

By Diana Vasquez '11

Did you ever wonder what teachers do when they don’t teach? Like what a HIDDEN TALENT? Well here are a few teachers that were not shy about telling there story.

Colonel Stewart’s secret is that he’s a brown belt in judo. He did judo for 3 years. Even though he doest go anymore I’m sure he can still judo-chop a pesky kid here and there. Here’s another secret; He went to school in Okinawa, Japan, for 7th, 8th, and 9th. He was there because his father was in the army. “It was like an American community in the middle of a Japanese community. He played four sports: football, baseball, basketball, and track.

Ms. Alday has some training in the martial arts as well. She is a red belt in tae kwon do. She started tae kwon do three years and in only two short years she became a red belt. She doesn’t use it to kick butt. “It’s a good stress reliever, keeps you healthy, and its great exercise”.

Mr. Kurlander has a few such as: he plays pool and bass. He played in a tri-state pool league. He started playing pool when he was young. “When I was little people would pick me up so I could shoot”. When he moved to Queens everyone played pool. According to Mr. K., it was what you did for fun, and it’s where you took someone for a date.

Mr. Kurlander is also a bass player. He started when he was 14 years old. He played heavy metal and in college he was the cover band for Alice In Chains. He made a few bucks off his hidden talent but nothing big. He says he was a better singer than a bass player.

Sergeant Majors hidden talent isn’t hidden. “My hidden talent is that I am good dancer." If you ever went to a school dance you would already know he likes to get down with his bad self. He found his talent in 9th grade at a school dance. “back then, we didn’t dance the way you guys dance today."

Issues in our Community: Teenage Obesity

By: Anonymous '11

Teen obesity is one of the biggest epidemics in America right now. If you are 20% over what is considered the normal weight, then you are medically obese. It is responsible for over 300,000 deaths a year. It is reported 42% of adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese. That puts 42% of America’s people 18 and younger at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. It is also noted that teens that are overweight now are more likely to be overweight as an adult. This means when they get older they are putting themselves at risk for other health problems.

Overweight children or teens just don’t have to deal with being overweight, but they also have to deal with being a social outcast. Being overweight amongst people your age that are skinny or normal weight size also give obese people low self-esteem. Having low self-esteem makes them not want to join any activities or be a part of something fun. Most likely when you are young and you’re suffering from low self-esteem, social discrimination and obesity you can fall into a depression. That causes you to stay home, watch television, play video games and gain more weight.

When Marine Math and Science Academy (MMSA) opened in the fall of 2007, not every student or cadet were able to get a JROTC uniform, they were considered “oversized” cadets. With every other cadet in their normal uniform, those teens were forced to wear a red polos and khaki pants. Now in the year of 2010 there are still cadets who have not received uniforms that others have gotten. Knowing that they cannot fit in a uniform really lowers their self-esteem and makes them feel left out. Also, during freshman year those cadets that were considered oversized were not allowed to go on trips like visits to College Fairs and the Memorial Day Parade because they didn’t have the right uniform. In addition, while other cadets were getting grades for inspection of the uniform those cadets had to sit out. Thankfully at MMSA all cadets are required to take a physical fitness test, which is some type of physical exercise.

Teen obesity is caused by unhealthy food choices and the lack of any physical activities. It is reported that 42% of America’s adolescent watch more than two hours of television a day. While food may be good for that moment, in the end you will suffer because those foods are what kill you. Tasty fast foods are very unhealthy and cause people to gain weight. MMSA students looking for a quick snack after school don’t have many healthy choices. Our neighborhood has places like McDonalds,Popeyes and Felony Franks, but these are very unhealthy food choices. Also kids who grow to be fat teens sometimes get it from how they were raised. Some students were raised by parents who also struggle with weight issues. People tend to suffer the same fate as their parents when it comes to obesity.

If you are an obese teen, there is nothing wrong with changing your ways right now. You can join sport activities and choose healthier snacks. Also while eating, when you feel you are getting full, just save the rest for later. You are not alone, there will always be someone to help and guide you to a healthier life.

Boost Up Your Self-Esteem

By: Shavonda Kornegay '11

Are you use to hearing yourself complain that your nose is too big, you wish you were taller, or you’re not cute enough? Many teenagers struggle with self-esteem. “I’m too fat, she is prettier then I am, or I wish I had bigger muscles”. Those are constant worries that teenagers struggle with each day they wake up.

Self esteem can range from how much pride people have in themselves, how worthwhile they feel, or wishing they were someone else. Statistics at KidsHealth (www.kidshealth.org) states that early teens have the lowest self-esteem. Why? Because teenagers bodies start to form and go through many changes during this time. As their body changes, their attitude about themself changes as well. This is when teens start to care about how other people see them.

Teen self esteem isn’t all about body image; it can also be about fitting in. Not being an athlete at school or the most popular girl/boy at your high school, can be a letdown to teenagers. This letdown can be accompanied with a lower sense of self worth. These feelings can be caused from problems with a friend or relationship, or eve problems at home. When you have low self esteem you often experience failure. It often creates stress, loneliness and depression, which sometimes leads to drugs and abuse

A female cadet ‘11 at Marine Math & Science Academy (MMSA) worries about her low self esteem with her body image. “Most of the time I worry about if I’m pretty enough, but I’m real conscious about my body.” Teens often compare themselves against others. “Often times I wish that I was someone else. If I can change something about myself, I would want to lose more weight and have a smaller chest size” said the cadet. A male cadet ‘11 at MMSA worries about his low self-esteem associated with fitting in. “Most times I think that I’m too shy. I would like to be more outspoken like most of the kids at my school.” He too, often has said to himself at times that he wish he was somebody else.

As we all know, low self-esteem can destroy success. So what can we do to help improve teen success? Ignore negative comments. You may often hear negativity not only from those you dislike, but from your own parents and even friends. Learn to train your brain to except the positive feedbacks of things and ignore the negative ones. Have you ever heard the term “you are what you think about most of the time”? Think highly upon yourself, set your mind to accomplishing things, and never have doubt.

Tips from Erupting Mind (www.eruptingmind.com)
Raise your self esteem everyday day
Create confidence connection in the brain
Practice
Act your way to high self esteem
Join social groups

Henry's Humorous Viral Videos

By: Henry Garcia '12

This is a weekly segment where I explore the internet looking for videos that include people doing some stupid things. This could include skateboarders crashing into walls, random things falling on someone, or just plain simple FAILS. If you see a video online that you think is funny and you want me to post it on this site send it to garciahenry94@yahoo.com

First up on the top 3 is a guy that decides to hop onto his sons skateboard hoping to show him some tricks that he might know. But as soon as he takes off it all goes down hill for him. Check it out for yourself by clicking on the link below.
http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/3sh2

Okay, number 2 in this week’s top 3 is this home video of a woman trying to do a handstand flip into a pool. Unfortunately she didn’t do it fast enough and ends up with some serious back problems as soon as she gets up, if she is able to get back up after this brutal hit. Check it out for yourself and be thankful you’re not the one rolling around in pain. http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/3tdn.

The last video is of this man that was interviewed down in Australia after he was attacked by a pit bull. But the funny part of the interview is when he gives the most specific details of how the dog sounded. He sounded like something out of a zombie movie. Even his wife seemed scared once the husband let out his animal side. Check out how it all happened http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/3ufb.

Teenage Pregnancey in America: What you should know

By: Ivonne Arredondo '12

Most teenage high school students don’t plan to get pregnant but a lot do. Three-quarters of a million teens between the ages of 15-19 become pregnant each year. The United States has the most likely possibility of teenage girls to get pregnant in the whole world. Center for Disease control says that 1/3 of teens get pregnant before the age of 20. Out of all teen pregnancies, 82% are unintentional. This is because every time a young woman is having sex for her first time usually is when she is more likely to get pregnant. Half of the teen mothers who do end up pregnant are right after the first time she had sex.

Teen mothers account for 11% of all births in the US. For young women age 15-19, African American teens are most likely to become pregnant (134 of 1,000 women). Slightly lower rates occur among Hispanics (131 of 1,000) followed by Whites (48 of 1,000). Out of all teen pregnancies, 57% end in birth, 14% end in miscarriage, and 29% end in abortion. Only 1% of teen pregnancies result in adoption placements. The teen mothers who do end up having the child and keeping it have a harder time going back to school and being successful in finding solid employment.

Teens that become pregnant are more likely to drop out of school. But some teens do want to finish school and get there high school diploma. If a teenage mother today does want to finish school she is most likely to get her GED. However, pregnant teens are less likely to attend college than teens who do not become pregnant. Most teen mothers wait until their child is at least 5 years old for them to go back to school.

Most teenage mothers feel embarrassed and ashamed of themselves while being pregnant. They become depressed and more likely to commit suicide. They usually don’t have the support of there family and there partner ends up leaving her because he does not want to carry the weight of having a child at his age. But some teen mothers have it good by having a supported family or a supported boyfriend. Usually if the two teens are still together they end up getting married.

If any teenage young women out there need help and someone to talk to, you can always go to your parents. If you don’t have that trust and don’t feel comfortable talking to your parents you can always go with a friend or teacher, or any adult. But the most important thing is to not keep it to yourself you’re going to need help and the sooner you get help the better it would be for you and your future to be child. There are a lot of support groups in Chicago. The biggest one you could go to is called Planned Parenthood. Just remember your not alone in this fight there’s people out there want to help.

Marines at the Movies - Alice in Wonderland

By: Ryan Hargrave '11

Alice in Wonderland is a classic children’s story about a girl who gets lost in a fantasy world filled with odd talking animals and weird creatures. In this new 2010 remake 19-year-old Alice returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns her true destiny: to end the Red Queen's reign of terror.

The film is Rated PG for fantasy action/violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar. This movie is very good for visual purposes but at times it’s hard to keep up with. Sometimes it just seems like a girl running around with a rabbit getting into crazy situations. The movie pretty much stays true to the original cartoon version except it has more of an eerie tone to it.

This is a movie I think kids and adults can both enjoy. Kids will enjoy it because all of how animated it is, and adults would like it because of the familiar storyline. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes fantasy movies. My overall rating for the movie is 3/5 stars, it’s definitely worth seeing. The only major problem was Johnny Depp’s character was supposed to be funny but to me he was just creepy. Thru most of the movie he just got Alice into outrageous mishaps but in the cartoon the “Mad Hatter” was a funny character who helped Alice. I think the movie did a good job on re-enacting the movie to match the Disney cartoon version.

Alice in Wonderland opened at number one with over $41 million in North America, setting a new record for an opening-day in March. The DVD is set to release on
June 1, 2010. Among the special features on both the DVD and Blu-ray versions is a featurette showing the differences between Burton's film and Lewis Carroll's original books.

MMSA Juniors See Jump in Practice ACT Scores

By: Shavonda Kornegay ‘11

Marine Math & Science Academy juniors have improved in their ACT practice scores. In March, MMSA juniors took a practice ACT and the scores have now come back. The juniors scored a composite of a 17.5. This was a stark improvement from their other two practice tests taken earlier in the year. In the month of October, the juniors scored a composite of 14.7 and in December when they took the second ACT, scored a composite score of a 15.1.

This shows how MMSA junior’s hard work and practice has paid off. ACT math classes, ACT science classes at MMSA, and KAPLAN on Saturdays can be the result in the increase. Harry-Frontis Diggs-Wilson went from scoring a 19 in December to a 22 in March. “I think attending KAPLAN on Saturdays and going to math classes with Mrs. Gordon has helped me a lot”, stated Wilson. Briana Brown has improved from a 17 in October to a 22 in March. “Mrs. Gordon classes helped me so much in approving my scores. I went from a 19 to a 27 in math”, said Brown.

MMSA junior’s scores back in the month of October decreased when they took their second test in December. “I think the reason why we decreased was because we weren’t taking our prep classes serious. I never showed up to Mrs. Gordon classes and many of my classmates barely showed up to KAPLAN on Saturdays”, stated Wilson. Now Wilson has been attending classes’ everyday. If Wilson would have attended class from the beginning, he would have been receiving a half-credit like some of his classmates. Wilson even noticed some of his classmates that he only seen 3 or 4 times at KAPLAN since December show up faithfully on Saturdays and they have even done make-up test downtown at KAPLAN.

“Students coming to my after-school ACT prep class just needed some refreshers on things they learned as Freshmen,” Mrs. Gordon said when asked about the jump in math scores, “when you practice something over and over it builds confidence, and doing well on the ACT is about having confidence in your abilities.”

Many of MMSA teachers have been encouraging and congratulating their juniors for their hard work and improvement since October. On April 28 and 29, will be a big day for MMSA juniors. The first day is the ACT test and the second day is the WorkKeys test. “Keep up the hard work juniors, and continue using techniques taught since your freshman year”, were encouraging words stated by Mr. Neusner.

Construction in MMSA Community: Change is on the way

By: Reginald King '11

Students at Marine Military Academy should take a good look at the community. In a few years, it won’t look the same at all. Construction is underway near the corners of Wilcox & Campbell as well as Adams and Campbell. With permission from the city, construction workers are going to be building houses for the community. The houses are being built for people who will live in the area. “The general idea is to bring in more people,” says Mr. Paul Stroh, the principal of MMSA. In bringing in new members to our community the property values should rise in the next decade or so.

The project has been underway for about two years. Unfortunately, the recession has made it difficult to fund the project so scheduling was difficult. Furthermore, this has caused staggering delays. Normally, construction would take up to three or four years, maybe five at the most. Nevertheless, the buildings will be finished.

Construction is not just benefiting the community, it’s also benefiting MMSA. They are planning to build open fields for sports teams. Specifically, they’re building track, soccer, and baseball fields. The basketball courts outside the cafeteria will be renovated as well. Far too often MMA sports teams have to go to other fields to practice. This should provide multiple advantages to our athletes.

The construction will be finished in a few years. So far the area doesn’t look like much. Construction workers come out now and then so there is not a ton of activity. There is no definite schedule so it ends when it ends. However, the community will be a much nicer-looking place in a few years.

Marines at the Movies- Cop Out

By Adrian Hopson '11

The movie Cop Out is an action-comedy film. The film stars Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis. The actors are well known for movies like Lil Man and Die Hard. This film made over 44 million dollars in theaters. The movie came out on February 26, 2010. It was released by Kevin Smith, the director.

This film is mainly about two cops who have been partners for nine years. Now they are trying to solve a drug case. In the midst of this, they end up losing something valuable and it ends up in the drug dealer hands. So they found a way to compromise with him. They found his car which had something of value to him and told him trade for it.

One of the bad qualities of this film is that there was too much profanity. There was also not enough action for this to be an action-comedy film. One of the good qualities in this movie was that the film wasn’t too short or too long. The film is not really where it could have been compared to other recent films.

In my opinion I rated this movie a three out of five stars. The film could have been better with more action and less profanity. I feel this film wasn’t one of those films I would pay to see again. Overall, this was pretty decent and I recommend for people to see it.

MMSA I-Pod Shuffle: Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree

By: Derico Williams '12

Music has become the cornerstone of what is known as, “American” life. Different genres of music have appeared over the last 100 years; however, most genres now are newer, redefined versions of older forms of music. Chicago, considered the home of the Blues, has produced big names in the music industry. One particular punk rock band, Fall Out Boy, hails from Wilmette, Illinois. The band was formed by friends Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz in 2001. Band members include Wentz and Trohman, as well as Patrick Stump and Andy Hurley.

On May 3, 2005, FOB released their first major label album entitled, From Under The Cork Tree. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at #9, selling over 68,000 copies its first week; after that it reached double platinum status selling more than 2.5 million albums in the U.S. alone. Their first single, “Sugar We’re Going Down”, peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200, #3 on the Modern Rock Charts, and #6 on the Pop 100. The video for the song won an MTV2 Award at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. The band was also nominated for “Best New Artist” at the 2006 Grammy Awards. The album was excellent, and fans would not have expected anything less from FOB. Although the video was funny, it had very little to do with the song itself. Another example of their videos not relating to the songs is their third single, “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Touch Me”. The video, which is about vampires, does not make sense when you listen to lyrics. For instance, one line of the song says: “You’re just the girl all the boys want to dance with, and I’m just the boy who had too many chances”. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with vampires, nor the title.

FOB could’ve done better for a debut album. They may’ve turned some fans of with similar sound. Most of the songs when you listen seem to have the same focus, the same sound. If you liked the two singles, you’ll love the album. What most fans who were turned off by the same sound don’t realize is if you give the songs a second chance, you can hear a difference. The first track on the album, "Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued” is a great song. It shows the fun nature of FOB, and shows the difference between them and an emo band. The album is a great listen if you’re attracted to upbeat and catchy songs. However, you’ll hate this album if you need technicality in your music.

Other than the videos and song titles, the album itself was a great debut for Fall Out Boy, the best they could have probably asked for. Fall Out Boy’s last album release was in the beginning of 2009 which was their last collaboration as a group. On November 20th, 2009 the band announced they would be putting their music on hiatus to work on individual endeavors. Fans will be disappointed; however, who knows what the future may hold for FOB.

Bulldog Tube Time: The Vampire Diaries

By: Neiah Williams ‘12

The Vampire Diaries is a young adult romantic drama that comes on the (CW) Thursdays at 8/7 central. The Vampire Diaries are in there first season of their series. The series is very popular because the Vampire Diaries has over 4.2 million viewers each week. I will give the vampire diaries a 9/10 star rating because it’s such a good series.

The Main Characters in the Vampire Diaries are Elena Gilbert, Damon Salvatore, Stefan Salvatore, Bonnie Bennett, and Caroline Forbes. Elena Gilbert is a teenage girl that is caught between two vampire brothers one is good (Stefan) and one is evil (Damon). Damon Salvatore is the older and the dangerous vampire who picks on his brother Stefan a lot. Stefan Salvatore is the younger vampire who struggles to live a human like life. Bonnie Bennett is Elena’s best friend who has psychic powers. Caroline Forbes is the sneaky and conniving friend of Elena.

Episode 1 is one of my personal favorites because this is where everything begins. After Elena’s parents dies from a fatal car accident she goes to live with her aunt who lives in Mystic falls. Months have passed since Elena tries to adjust to her new life. As the school year begins Elena and Bonnie are fascinated by a new student, Stefan Salvatore whom they think is attractive. Chemistry begins to increase between Stefan and Elena. Several attacks have been reported in the town and no one knows the cause of them. Except for Stefan who has a clue that it is his older brother Damon.

In my opinion Nina Dobrev as Elena, portrays her character very well because she plays the role of a depressed teenage girl. Ian Somerhalder as Damon portrays his character very well because he’s a hot vampire, and his acting is really good who plays the dangerous bad boy role. Paul Wesley as Stefan plays his character decent but I want to see more good emotional acting from him. It’s like he has the same facial expressions in his acting. Katerina Graham as Bonnie portrays her character well because her character is weird and she fits that category. Candice Accola as Caroline plays her character well because she’s the bossy girl and I can see her being like that in real life.

The Characters in the Vampire Diaries have changed a lot throughout the season. Elena has changed a lot because she’s not that scared little girl anymore who won’t take changes or chances. Damon has become very funny and is starting to show his real feelings that could lead him to becoming a nice vampire. Stefan has changed a lot because he tries to interact and live a human like life. Bonnie has changed a lot because she’s actually starting to trust and use her powers more often. Caroline has changed from starting off as the sneaky and conniving girl to becoming a non judgmental person.

The Vampire Diaries is a series for teenagers and young adults. You would like the Vampire Diaries if you’re a person that likes vampires, thrillers, or romance. I have a big obsession over vampires by the way they just react to things, how they talk, and when they bite people. If you’re not a person that likes vampires, thrillers, or romance than the Vampire Diaries would not take your interest. The Vampire Diaries can compare to other series, TV shows, and movies that have the same genre because they all fall underneath thriller. For example, Twilight, True Blood, and the Vampire Diaries all have one thing in common besides vampires, which is romance. The vampires in the shows all fell in love with humans and have a big obsession over them.

In my opinion the Vampire Diaries is a good series because I obviously love vampires. I love Damon Salvatore out of all the characters in the series because he has had a lonely life. He’s always biting people; he’s the dangerous vampire and just can’t seem to have friends around. That’s the reason why he picks on his little brother because he has no friends and he’s very lonely.

MMSA Gamer Guide- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the hottest game right now. This game is an intense first-person gunplay game. The basic plot of this game is to fight the shadowy world of terrorists, arms dealers, and nationless armies. The cost of this game is $50 and can be bought at any local Gamestop or Best Buy. The game is available for PS3, X-Box 360 and PSP. I feel that if you like shooting games then you can’t miss with this one.

Take the role of Sergeant Gary "Roach" Anderson, an elite member of the multinational Task Force 141 and you won’t be getting off your couch for hours. The graphics are incredible and the story is what you look for when you play army games: different settings, weapons and twists in the storyline that you won’t see coming.

The multiplayer online is another big feature in this game because players can challenge others from around the world to test their skills. This particular part of the game you just run around and kill others. It’s a great way to test yourself and others.

This is a great game to buy, and all real gamers should have this game in their collection. Final Ranking for Modern Warfare: 5 out of 5 Stars.

Marines at the Movies- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

By Derico Williams '12 and Neiah Williams '12

Looking for a movie next time your on Netflix or Blockbuster? If you come across Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen be careful. Despite its high box office totals and word of mouth, this movie isn't for everyone.

Transformers was directed by Michael Bay and its runtime was one hundred and fifty minutes. The movie was released on June 24, 2009. The movie is categorized as an action/ adventure movie, its box office was $402,076,689. The movie starred Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson.

Most scenes made no sense at all, for example, most science fiction movies have already made it clear aliens are impervious to human technology. However, you constantly see the robots being killed by the military’s simplistic weapons. The movie downplayed the intelligence of humans and greatly increased that of the robots. The first 30 minutes in, wasn’t all bad, after that however it became very droll. The storyline became stupid and hard to follow.

My kid sister could have acted an improv better than the actors/actresses in the movie. The movie turned out to have a silver lining however: Megan Fox. This beautiful young actress was able to bring the puppet-like acting of the human cast back to life. Ironic, outside of Ms. Fox, the robots had more acting skills than the actors/actresses. The movie wasn’t all terrible dialogue and life-less acting. The auto-bots and the parents of Shia LaBeouf were effectively used for comedy relief. One particular scene, was when Shia Lebouf”s mother, became high after eating a pot brownie, divulging an intimate moment between Fox and LaBeouf. Another positive about the movie is the dialogue of the auto-bots. They speak a variety of accents, from British to Hip-Hop.

I will give Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen a 7.5/10 star rating. You’ll like this movie if you’re a person that likes watching movies about robots. The Main robots in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are auto bots, Optimus Prime, Bumble Bee, Megatron, and Skid & Mudflap. The auto bots are the main robots in the movie they bring the life and excitement out of the movie. Optimus prime is the leader of the auto bots; he can transform himself into Peterbilt truck. Bumble bee is the cool auto bots; he can transform himself into a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Megatron and Optimus prime are brothers, Megatron is an evil Decepticon. He and Optimus prime cant stand one another because Megatron wants to be the ruler of everything. Skid & Mudflap are twin teenage auto bots, who transforms themselves into a Chevrolet beat and Trax Concept. Skid & Mudflap brings the comic out of the movie because they’re always getting beat up, and cracking jokes about people. You’ll dislike this movie if you’re not a fan of robots, hate comedy, or a person that doesn’t like action or adventure movies.

MMSA Juniors Dominate in Dodgeball

By Tracey Kimble '11

The MMSA Juniors wanted to make sure that the school knew who was the strongest class. And so on February 19th, the Junior class came together and wrote a note to the Freshmen challenging them to a game of dodgeball.

During each ROTC period the juniors battled the freshmen in dodgeball. “It’s a great experience!” Stated Abraham Morales 11’, “This kind of event should occur more often because it brings everyone together.” The Juniors were proud to see that the Freshmen were learning and thought they were good competition.

Before the dodgeball matches began, the freshmen thought they stood a chance. “We are the best,” Stated Sharon Burton 13’. “The juniors will lose because this is their first time competing against us.” she concluded. Even once they started losing, they were still determined that they were going to win. One of the Juniors stated that he was proud of the Freshmen and thought they were fast learners.

The Sophomores couldn’t resist but to join the action and went on the junior’s side during the beginning. But as the day went on, the Juniors in Gyt Sgt Bibbs’ 4th period challenged the sophomores as well. They beat the Sophomores and Freshmen countless number of times.

Once again, another friendly school competition helped bring up school spirit by bringing students together. The Juniors can’t wait to defend their title as “Dodgeball Kings” next year.

One BILLION Dollar Deficit is now a Factor for CPS and MMSA

By Tomas Tapia '11

Marine Math & Science Academy (MMSA), Chicago Public Schools (CPS), and the community could soon be affected by solutions made by the CPS chief attempting to shear off next year’s whopping one-billion-dollar deficit. Facing a one-billion-dollar deficit for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year and the only way to reduce it is by a combination of pension reform, union concessions and job cuts, said schools chief Ron Huberman.

Teacher layoffs, increased class sizes and cuts to important programs are distinct possibilities. Huberman already has a tough budget to handle this year that started with a half-billion-dollar deficit and trimmed millions in programs, laid off 536 employees and mandated six furlough days for nonunion staff in order to decrease this year’s deficit, but he’s now facing a new challenge for next year’s budget.
Huberman offered examples of possible solutions to attempt to trim down a one-billion-dollar deficit on his PowerPoint presentation. Huberman announced Thursday Feb. 25; another three weeks of furlough days and 500 more layoffs for nonunion staff for next year’s deficit but that isn’t enough to satisfy the community and the school chief. Huberman is looking at other ways to tackle this outranges deficit. Plans to decrease or negotiate teachers pay, cut services made the teachers and the community angry.

"We will not tolerate the implied threats being made by Mr. Huberman that he may have to cut programs and services for our students or lay off teachers," Chicago Teacher's Union President Marilyn Stewart said in a statement.

Other solutions include cancelling the sophomore level sports for all CPS schools. On Tuesday district sports director Calvin Davis sent a memo to the school athletic directors explaining that the sophomore level sports would be on hold and only varsity and freshman level teams will be allowed to practice for now. The memo was very confusing to many coaches, and the news comes at the last possible moment for sophomore coaches and players.

As if waking up early to catch the bus wasn't a hassle already...thank you CTA

By Daisy Guzman '11

As of February 7, 2010, CTA has made a bus and rail change that will affect many of Marine Math and Science Academy's (MMSA) students. Nine express bus routes will be fully eliminated including X49 (Western express route) which many of Marine's students take everyday. Train riding hours have been cut and now start later and end earlier.

This change has affected a lot of people; especially students going to MMSA. Having to wake up earlier to catch the bus on time doesn’t please most of the students. “It’s not fair, I need to get up early, what’s that about?!” says Cadet Julie Ayala '11. As for the train being delayed, this has caused problems as well. Along with the bus, trains will be packed and come less frequently then they did before. Train times will be pushed back for all rail line affecting MMSA’s students from every side of the city.

Most students already know when their bus and trains old arrival times were, allowing them to plan everything to make it to school and back home at a certain time. But with this new change, things can get frustrating for students adjusting to the new schedule. “Waiting for train means waiting longer which means you might miss your bus, geez everything goes wrong!” exclaimed Cadet Viviana Guzman `12

Although it has been rumored that Mayor Daley has tried to get all the people in charge of CTA to meet and come up with some solutions, even with these promises being made it could be weeks until this issue is solved.
